Internet Marketing Consultants Boston: Google Places Beta Testing on the way!

Yesterday David Mihm tweeted that Google had created a number of new city sites or portals. This is Google’s effort to bring a number of initiatives together in a single place: Places Pages, Offers, Mobile, Events and promotion of its ads/services to local business owners.
Google has created an appealing directory of local businesses and things to do in cities. The new sites are an extension and logical evolution of what Google has been doing in local. These city sites are also much more user friendly in some ways than Google Maps itself.

Just a Few Cities — Boston Coming Soon!

As Mihm points out Google appears to be indexing these sites in search results. Right now they’re hard to find through Google search. If you search, for example, on “Portland” or “things to do in Portland” or “restaurants Portland” you won’t find them. You have to know they exist. And they appear to exist in just a handful of cities, though more will be coming.
Here are four examples:
The interesting part will be the effect this will have on Yellowpages, Superpages, and Yelp. Stay Tuned!

Example: Notice the mobile apps available for each city!!!

Reachlocal Acquires Deal-On, Internet Marketing Consultants of Boston

ReachLocal Acquires DealOn, A Local Deals Company

This Press Release is from the Official Reachlocal.com Corporate Website:

Press Release written by Shawn Merani at ReachLocal

"ReachLocal to Build Deal Network and Offer Exchange to Source Local Deals for Online Publishers
(Woodland Hills, Calif.) – February 15, 2010 – ReachLocal, Inc., a leader in local online marketing solutions for small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), announced today that it has acquired DealOn Media, LLC, a local deals company. The acquisition, with a value of approximately $10 million, provides ReachLocal with a turnkey platform to strategically enter the local deals space.  With DealOn,  ReachLocal acquires a fully functional operating local deals business that operates in 18 markets across the U.S., in addition to a comprehensive  product suite including the DealOn.com destination site, a full white-label and co-branded deals platform allowing online publishers to offer deals to their customers, and the recently launched OfferEx deal exchange which enables other deal sites and publishers to supply and/or resell deals through a plug-and-play exchange.
“The rapid growth in the local deals space further demonstrates the magnitude of the shift of dollars from offline to online.  We believe that local deals are here to stay, will become ubiquitous, and will become an important way for publishers to monetize local users online,”  said Zorik Gordon, Co-Founder and CEO of ReachLocal. “However, we believe the challenges of deal sourcing is the biggest gating factor limiting entry and success of additional players in this market. Much in the same way we bring SMBs’ Search, Display and Social Media spend to online publishers, we see a  large opportunity to play the same, central role in the deals ecosystem by becoming the premier source of deals from local merchants to publishers.”
DealOn was founded in 2009 and currently sources and manages deals for its DealOn.com site and for several online media properties.  “We’re excited to combine our technology platform and emerging publisher network with ReachLocal’s significant expertise and reach into the SMB marketplace through its market leading digital sales force of Internet Marketing Consultants,” said Rich Razgaitis, General Manager of ReachLocal Deals.  “We believe this combination will provide SMBs with another valuable outlet for acquiring new customers as part of an integrated online marketing budget and, at the same time, enable online publishers to source, brand and deliver local deals to their customers.”

Google Places New Look Pushes Local SEO off the page:

Posted By Matt Gilarde of Reachlocal Boston

New Look For Local Google Results with Geo Modified Search Terms For Instance "Plumbers Boston":

The local Internet Marketing Landscape of Boston is forever changed........for now. Google has launched a new look for the search results page when a searcher types in a business type and a geographic location like "Plumber Boston". This is huge for a few reasons, earlier in my blog I posted the "rules" for claiming and optimizing your Google Maps listings, well that has now come into play. Google is indexing the best listings with the best reviews on the natural side of the search results, pushing regular directory listings and local company SEO listings further down the page. WOW. This puts Superpages and other directories in a tough position. This also makes Paid Adwords positions even more important. I have included a few examples:

Testimonial

I am a small business owner and distributor of Ball Bearings. For the last
5 years, my marketing strategy relied heavily upon Thomas Industrial Network listings. I had some results, but was pretty much disappointed by the Return I got from my advertising investment. For my business it was a major investment with minimal results. I would generally get 1 to 4 phone calls a month from Thomas Industrial Network. Luckily, in November I was contacted by Matt Gilarde of ReachLocal. Matt explained to me how ReachLocal would position my company on all the major Search Engines through Pay Per Click Advertising and manage my program, optimize my keywords, and track the results. I agreed to do a 3-month trial pay-per-click program.

The result: I learned what Optimization is, the first month I received 177 phone calls, 54 emails, and 4450 visits. The second month, with the same budget, I received 377 phone calls, 65 emails, and 7500 visits. The Third month I received 410 phone calls, 88 emails, and 8227 visits. My budget never changed and Reachlocal doubled my traffic! With Call tracking, Matt helped me monitor calls that were generated from the program, I was able to listen to my calls and link them to actual sales. Many of those calls have turned into regular accounts. In turn I have renewed my contract with Matt and have hired a Marketing Representative to handle my account and update my website.

As an Industrial company I have never had a medium that would deliver such incredible results for my advertising dollars. The internet is probably the greatest marketing tool that the Industrial Community has ever had, and ReachLocal takes the guess work out of getting the best results from such a powerful tool. The call tracking and reporting gave me a way to see exactly where ever dollar was spent and calculate a true ROI. I would recommend Reachlocal to any industrial company that is interested in growing their business.

Google Places and Maps Listings Best Practices

Many people ask me how to get listed “higher” on Google Maps. There are many factors that come into play and every SEO pro has a different theory. All I can do is apply best practices, meaning, I have applied the following steps to each maps listing and the listing has been listed correctly each time. Here are examples of actual listings and the reasons why they worked.

1. Make sure your Physical Address is located in the service area you want to be listed in.

2. Business Categories: You want to pick business categories that fit your business. I like to make sure I list the business categories in the company description. If you can update and edit your website, it is good practice to try and make sure that your website has those services listed on the homepage, and I always try and have them listed in the meta tags as well.

3. Lately I have been trying to add a Keyword in the business name, it’s not written anywhere, but it seems to help. Here is an example of a company that moved up a position after changing the title:

4. Have clients post reviews to the Google Maps page. Also get a Yelp page and have clients post testimonials there as well. Google uses customer reviews to rank businesses. Google places is suggesting local businesses to the user base, if the user base is subjected to poor service and experience, the user base is less likely to use Google Places as a source of reference. Google recently sent out Certified Google Favorite Place decals to businesses with good reviews and lots of traffic. Here is a link to the Google criteria: Google Places Decal Criteria

5. Make sure you complete your business profile page. Fill out all the information, upload a video, upload the store front and other pictures from your business. Upload a logo. Write the description. Have reviews posted. If there is an option to add content, add content.
